FAQ

Answers to our most frequent questions.

  • What is the Accomplice Academy?

The Accomplice Academy is an all-in-one online solution for learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and becoming a DEI accomplice. Our ultimate mission is to guide organizations and people to wholeness via training and engagement. The Accomplice Academy is a comprehensive library offering video and digital resources that engage a community in DEI conversations that should happen but aren’t. It’s a safe and brave community of people who want to craft their views of DEI and execute training in their communities and workplace. The Accomplice Academy grew from Dr. Monica Cox’s Twitter presence and a viral tweet from July 2021 that confirmed the need to engage in deep, authentic DEI conversations. Across industries, people mentioned how the tweet transformed how they viewed DEI. The response moved Dr. Monica to expand her offerings, hence the Accomplice Academy. In case you’re wondering, here’s the tweet: Instead of showing me your diversity statement, show me your hiring data, your discrimination claim stats, your salary tables, your retention numbers, your diversity policies, and your leaders’ public actions against racism. End performative allyship.

  • How do I know if the Accomplice Academy is right for me?

There is no one answer to this. Dr. Cox has noted that people who hunger for DEI knowledge and ways to implement that knowledge are the ones most likely to seek what the Accomplice Academy is offering. People also often have a gut instinct that someone isn’t right in their environment, including: Diverse groups feel unsafe. Something is wrong with diversity efforts, but they don’t know what the problem is and/or how to address the problems. Their organization is in a “diversity war.” Employees from diverse groups leave the organization soon after they enter. Leaders from diverse groups can’t do their jobs effectively because the climate is toxic. Diversity policies don't line up with diversity actions. -A toxic culture hinders the progress of the organization's vision. -The organization avoids diversity-related conversations. -Leaders think diversity is a committee or single person’s issue. -HR doesn’t implement diversity policies effectively. -People who cause harm in the workplace aren’t held accountable. -Diversity, equity, and inclusion are discussed incorrectly in the organization.

  • How do I apply Accomplice Academy learning to my daily life?

The focus of the Accomplice Academy is on learning practical skills you can apply. Bring your questions and concerns to the sessions to develop your tailored accomplice plan. We will discuss cases, so you will have support as you engage in daily situations that require you to execute Accomplice Academy content. In this community, you will be coached and held accountable for your DEI actions in a way that aligns with who you are and who you want to become. We’ve got you.

  • Is the Accomplice Academy only for white people, particularly straight white men?

The short answer is no. Everyone is called to be a DEI accomplice. Speaking up and out about injustice or stepping up with power, privilege, and positionality isn’t bound to only one type of person. Given society, norms, and systemic oppression, however, people most likely to benefit from the Accomplice Academy are those in leadership positions and power roles who can translate Accomplice Academy learning into policy changes and organizational transformation. Being an accomplice can be risky, so people willing to step up for others are ideal members. You don’t have to enter an accomplice, but you need to seek growth by joining this community. Teachability, humility, and vulnerability will help you achieve your accompliceship goals as you engage with others who want to grow too.
